No Mourning, Only Celebration

Much of Beijing woke up to the news that the irrefutable King of Pop had passed away, much too early, at the age of 50. As his iconic songs are being blasted around the world right now, Beijingers, too, are mourning the loss of such a creative genius.

With his undeniable hits, it's hard to imagine that Michael Jackson would have wanted his fans to sit around and wallow. In addition to attending the myriad of MJ tributes going on around town, Beijingers can also support our local original artists, who may aspire to, one day, make a lasting impact on worldwide music as well.

Here are five musical acts worth checking out this weekend:

Jun 26

The Gar, Carsick Cars
The long-awaited release of the sophomore album from the city’s most talented nauseous automobiles. Lead singer Zhang Shouwang is considered one of the most talented (probably the most talented) musicians in town at the moment. The show will be opened by The Gar, another uprising grunge band in town. RMB 60. 9pm. Yugong Yishan (6404 2711)

Buyi
The band from Ningxia, Wild West of China, has been around Beijing local music scene for over 14 years. As one of the vanguards of China’s folk music, they are now combining more diversity into their music, including electric guitar and guzheng, providing a good blend between the traditional Chinese sound and modern rock elements. RMB 30. 9.30pm. Jiangjinjiu Bar (8405 0124)

Jun 27

Black Cat Bone, DH & Chinese Hellcats
Cool cats from the expat blues band chill it out, supported by local cool guys and gals performing some 30s swing music of rockabilly. RMB 50. 10pm. 2 Kolegas (6436 8998)

No Name Trio

This Beijing-based International trio consisting of Zoe Wang (China, accordionist), Nico Torrese (France, guitar) and Daniel Brustman (USA, guitar) specializes on French gypsy jazz. They have built solid reputations by playing for embassy parties and dining events. Free. 9.30pm. Stone Boat Café (6501 9986)

Jun 28

Ma Tiao & Band, Dongzi
How about sitting on the grass and listening to some Xinjiang and Mongolian music in a sunny (or burning) afternoon? As part of the 2 Kolegas outdoor series, Xinjiang native Ma Tiao combine rock and his native uyghur folk, where Dongzi performs some Mongolian throat singing by going acoustic. RMB 30, RMB 20 (students). 3pm. 2 Kolegas (6436 8998)

And if you just can't get enough of MJ himself, head out to Fez tonight for "Moonwalks from Morocco."

At Fez Bar tonight from 9pm to late, Dj Master Suiki, the man who was there from the beginning of the man that was Michael Jackson will dig up the late’s greatest hits and everything Motown! Not to be missed a toast to a man that was loved, revered and sometimes a little freaky. Kick of 9 till late, lets send him off with a toast to what no one can deny was a talented pop icon. MJ Shooter on arrival compliments of Fez's world famous mixologist: Jackie Ho. Click here to read Jackie's Interview with agenda Magazine.

Next weekend on July 3rd, from 10pm to late, prepare to dance the night away at Club LA's Official Michael Jackson Tribute: Don't Stop. Stay tuned for more details on this.
