Helping Haiti – Fundraising Campaign in Beijing
China is unfortunately all too familiar with the results of horrific earthquakes, but the tragedy in Haiti has overtaken even the 2008 Wenchuan disaster in terms of casualties. The official death toll is now 70,000 and rising. A series of fundraisers will be taking place in Beijing over the next fortnight, allowing local residents to contribute to relief efforts. The fundraising kicks off tomorrow night (Friday, January 22) with Haiti Rise at the Bookworm.
Haiti Rise starts at 7pm, and will include a photo and video presentation on current developments, a live tele-conference with personnel on the ground in Haiti, and a discussion on the international response to the crisis. Organizers recommend a RMB 50 donation, while the Bookworm will donate a percentage of food and beverage takings on the night.
From Sunday, January 24 to Sunday, January 31, Beijingers can participate in Eat for Haiti. For each patron who buys a RMB 200 voucher and eats at one of the following restaurants, RMB 100 will be donated to relief efforts:
Hatsune
Kagen
Karaiya
Kagen Teppanyaki
Oden
Meat & Wine Co.
Sadler Ristorante
Zen
Kro's Nest
All-Star Sports Bar & Grill
Metro
Grange (Westin)
Taste (Westin)
Zen5es (Westin)
Scarlett Wine Bar
Vouchers can be purchased at the Bookworm event on Friday, or by sending an email to: haitirise@jumpfoundation.org or kristen@lumdimsum.com.
Saturday, January 30 is Drink for Haiti. Purchase a bottle of booze at Bling and 20 percent of the price will be donated to the campaign.
Finally, on Thursday, February 4 Beijingers can Party for Haiti at Hatsune in the Village. RMB 200 gets you entry and all-you-can-drink, with 50 percent of takings donated to Haiti.
The campaign has been organized by the JUMP Foundation, described on their website as “an experiential education provider” setting up youth education programs addressing issues of leadership and global citizenship.
All takings from the fundraising campaign will go to Global Potential, an orgnization that works to empower low-income communities through skills and training, and Partners in Health, who have been working to provide medical services in Haiti for over two decades.
