Weekend Live Music Roundup: Paris meets Beijing, Taste the Peaches, Farewell Sugar Jar

Things that happened last week were nothing but proof of no ____(please fill the blank yourself, I didn't say anything, I thank my country first, hail to harmonious society), no business. I'm not here to judge whether Mao Livehouse is innocent on the fire regulation and what not, all I know is "they appear closed during the day and open up at night when we are off duty. It is very hard for us to catch them."(words of a police officer at Jiaodaokou police station, according to Global Times) - so that means I can rob someone's cupcake tonight because no one's going to jail for that. Ace, I've always wanted to do that.

Another closure comes from Sugar Jar in 798 Art District, one of the most interesting record shops in town (or should I call it a library). The owner claims that the 798 wuye has been forcing them to leave since last July, and the shop will be closed by April 30, so it'd be a reasonable choice to check it out now.

Life goes on, rock n roll don't take no break. During the past few weeks, there are people around me have been calling Peaches (see interview here) a "dude" or "fella", I'm here to say this is probably the most dangerous thing ever happen to Beijing (unless Michael Bolton makes it here in June). Check out Yugong Yishan on Saturday night to find out why. Back to Friday, local avant-garde gurus Xiao He, Yan Jun, Li Tieqiao put on an improvising session at Star Theater with French band ETC as part of The Croisements Festival. The session continues on Saturday afternoon at UCCA, where Yan Jun and ETC are joined by guzheng experimenter Wu Fei - however, all of the ETC performances will happen under one condition: they can arrive in Beijing on time, considering that the Iceland eruption has made flights in Europe either canceled or postponed.

In other volcano related news, British rockers Puressence (see interview here) are performing (again) at Yugong Yishan on Friday because their flight can't find a place to land in England, meaning they are stuck here until May 4. Words also says they will play another intimate gig in The Pomegranate in Shunyi at a TBD date and time next week, we'll keep you posted. It won't take long for them to become Chinese if they keep staying. We can do it, power to the people, keep it real.
