Maxime Bureau: The M Agency Pushes Things Forward
As one of the promoters behind BaiCai, co-owner of White Rabbit and a DJ in his own right, Maxime Bureau has hardly stopped to think since arriving in Beijing. Now he’s taken stock and decided to get serious, launching a full-blown events operation, The M Agency, with fellow promoter and long-time collaborator Milky Chi. Maxime told us how the pair plan to shape up nightlife in Beijing and beyond with their new venture.
Inspirations
“In work, my biggest inspiration is my grandmother, May de Lencquesaing. She’s a winemaker, 86 years old with a Blackberry and still traveling the world.”
Truth and lies
“In six years in China, I’ve learned to be very suspicious of big talkers. Truthful people are humble people – you discover through others how important they are. When within five minutes you already know every detail of somebody’s life, from his car to his limited edition watch, you know the guy is dodgy!”
Music
“The first thing I listen to in the morning is CNN. Last thing at night, I listen to my girlfriend, Caroline.”
Boys Noize
“In October, we’re bringing Boys Noize over from Germany. He has been described as ‘part of a new mongrel breed of techno artist, beaming a myriad of influences from the past through a prism to create something fresh.’”
“Boys Noize’s music is like corn flakes in a White Russian. It’s the sound of urban life – pumping, quality, dirty electro. People with pacemakers, do not enter!”
The M Agency
“BaiCai was a group of friends that wanted to bring DJs to China and have fun, but over the past four years Milky and I became very experienced. The obvious next step was to register a company, get organized and open in Shanghai.”
“We want to hold at least four large-scale electro events per year in Beijing/Shanghai. We’re also planning an outdoor festival for summer 2011. As Intro did marvelously well for techno music, M plans to do the same for electro. I’ve always been fascinated by how electro has drawn in so many other arts, like fashion and graphic design. Electro perfectly represents the urban culture we live in, and our festival will reflect that.”
“Beijing will always be our base, but we also want to do events in Japan and Korea. We have the contacts over there; why not use them?”
“I’d love to bring Phoenix and LCD Soundsystem to Beijing, finishing off with a banging set from 2 Many DJs! Or just the Daft Punks. Vive la France, haha!”
Boys Noize plays Star Live with Saul D, LIman, A.M.U and Guzz. Oct 16. RMB 150, RMB 100 (advance). 10pm. (6425 5677)
