Swine Flu Hits the Capital Again

Winter means cold, snow, and unfortunately the flu. Yesterday, Xinhua (Chinese only) reported a new outbreak of the H1N1 virus, more commonly known as swine flu, in Beijing. While the specific strain is no longer classified as a “pandemic” as it was in 2009, the outbreak has led to four confirmed fatalities this year.

The first week of the Spring Festival saw 11 cases of confirmed H1N1 influenza in Beijing and one death caused by the disease. The Municipal Health Bureau has reported 195 confirmed cases of Influenza A H1N1 in Beijing, with 4 deaths, since the beginning of January. The Global Times suggests that the peak of the flu season will drop off in March.

Back in 2009, Beijing doctor and blogger Dr Richard posted about the basic facts of the flu, ways to avoid it, and how to take care of yourself if you get it. You can check out the blog here, but some of the key points are: it’s a flu that hits most people like any regular flu, practice good hygiene and wash your hands frequently, and if you do have the flu stay home, take drugs and get rest.
