Back for More: International Food Warehouse
“Back for More” is a regular magazine column in the Beijinger in which we revisit old favorites.
Ask any parent what happens when their baby turns two – their personality changes completely. To celebrate its second anniversary, IFW cast off its international buffet trappings and emerged with a menu entirely composed of contemporary Chinese dishes.
IFW is proud of its signature roast duck (RMB 188), or as they call it “我家烤鸭真的好” – literally “Our homemade roast duck really rocks!” This is no idle boast. In my opinion, a tasty roast duck should meet two basic standards: thick, crunchy and succulent skin, and moist, flavorful flesh. The duck got full marks on our visit; in fact, we couldn’t help but order another. Do take note that the 40-day “Cherry Valley” duck requires approximately an hour for preparation, so ordering in advanced is advisable.
The braised lamb terrine (RMB 65 京葱羊肉糕) looks French, but the presence of Shandong leeks and spring onion pancakes reminds you that its soul is all Beijing. The deboned fried white fish (RMB 65 椒盐九肚鱼) remains tender under a crisp golden coat, and the flavors shine through when dipped into a sesame-pepper salt.
Chilli oil freaks will be satisfied by the Sichuan lamb shank in spicy broth (RMB 160 香辣石锅羊膝) and carbophobes should think twice about saying no to the hand-pulled “belt” noodles with braised pork ribs (RMB 55). Everybody will agree that the lychee crème brulee (RMB 40) provides a sweet, happy ending. You’ve come a long way, baby.
