Win Tickets: Boys Noize Strikes Back
If you were at Tango last time Boys Noize came to town, you’ll probably already have your ticket for his return visit. We spoke to the electro icon, producer and founder of Boysnoize Records about David Lynch, Prince and his secret soft spot for George Michael.
Your Beijing set last year was one of 2010’s highlights. How are you going to improve on that?
For me, it’s easy to improve because I always try to play new music – I’ve got a lot from myself and Boysnoize Records, plus there’s a lot of other great new music out there.
Earlier this year, you remixed a track by David Lynch. Did you feel under pressure to make it “weird” in the style of a Lynch film?
No, not at all. It just happened to end up “weirder” than my regular remixes. I could have gone straight 4/4 epic house remix, but that would have been too easy.
Which David Lynch character would you be?
I’d be the Mulholland Drive itself, so I’d know what happens in that film.
You’ve remixed a huge range of artists. Which meant most to you?
It was a big deal for me when I remixed Depeche Mode. Just listening to Dave Gahan’s vocals singing “Personal Jesus” without any effects at my studio gave me goosebumps.
Who’s still out there that you’d like to remix?
Prince or Elvis, maybe?
And anyone who you would refuse to work with?
Haha, too many to count. I have to say “No” more often than “Yes.”
Name one album you secretly love, but would never admit to enjoying.
Hmm. Maybe Faith by George Michael.
I want to start a record label. What advice would you give me?
Don’t do it.
What have been your three favorite tracks Boysnoize Records has put out this year?
“Amatilda” by Jan Driver, “Knight Moves” (DJ Koze Remix) by Gonzales and “Music is Awesome” by Housemeister.
You’ve already achieved so much and you’re not even 30. Where do you want to be by the time you’re 40?
Haha, I don’t know, man. What I’ve learned is that you can’t plan too much. I just hope that everything stays like it is right now.

Boys Noize tells us he's a closet fan of George Michael's Faith, but what's one song or album you're ashamed to admit to having a secret liking for?

Roommate and I used to blast this record in our dorm room (circa 2009):
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass - "Whipped Cream and Other Delights"
Album cover is a real treat if you're up for an image search.

For a song that I secretly love....I won't tell you!
But it rhymes with
Girls just want just to have run
but since the "I'm a boy listening to girl music" angle has already been posted, I will also mention how I try to hide my smile every time limpbizkit is played (surprisingly often in beijing...).
If you give me a ticket I will wear a backwards red baseball cap, tell people I am from Jacksonville Florida and maybe bring Carmen Electra.

Even though it was used in Guantanamo Bay to mentally torture prisoners…. I don’t mind listening to The Barney Song…that’s right, I grew up with it and if it was on the radio… I wouldn’t turn it off.
And if Boyz Noize wants to put his skills to the test… try mixin Barney

Gaga - Bad Romance. Regardless of whether she's a good musician or not, people get mocked if they say they are gaga fan, unfortunately. But i have to say, this song makes me dance a lot.

I used to play Britney Spears' "Lucky" song on repeat... Not proud of it, but I own up to it... Everytime the video came on I had to stop what I was doing to watch and sing along. haha... being a guy it was kind of embarassing and now a little ashamed about it.

Re: Win Tickets: Boys Noize Strikes Back
My closet album would have to be Avril Lavigne's "Let Go" (I'm a guy). It was heavy on my middle school play list, especially Complicated; I guess she really spoke to my teenage angst. However, as I got further and further away from the sk8tr girl aesthetic, Avril would fade from my life...
Until this past spring in Beijing, when I caught her concert at the Music Valley festival. I rocked hard with all her Chinese fans, who knew all the lines from every song she sang. Not a diehard Avril fan myself, I thought to myself that while it's nice to indulge in nostalgia once in a while, there's a reason why Avril is staying in my closet
