Charity Begins at Punk: Street Kids Help Street Kids This Friday

Electronic music promoters Street Kids celebrate their second anniversary this Friday (March 30) at Punk, but instead of making it all about them, they want to use the occasion to help out some less fortunate kids - the children of Guang Ai School in Shunyi.

Guang Ai School was founded in 2003 by Shi Qinghua, and currently provides free food, accommodation and education to over 100 orphans, street children and children of poverty-stricken families.

Street Kids promoter Mu Yu tells us the idea for tonight's party started out with a Facebook message from Zambia ...

"I got a comment on the wall of the Streetkids Facebook group from a guy name Victor in Zambia, saying: 'Being a street kid was a tough life for me, and that's why I'm so passionate about the kids ... Somebody help me manage a home for the kids. I already started but need your support.' I checked his Facebook, and found he was working for an orphanage foundation in his hometown.

"When I first saw his comment, I felt like he didn't know the Street Kids we have is totally different from what he was imagining. I felt sorry for him but I didn't think more. Then one day, I randomly saw this comment again, and started thinking there must be something we could do to help some kids. We're not a charity group, but thinking about people in the party industry, we can do something more meaningful while having a good fun night. I checked out a few websites, made a bunch of phone calls, and finally we found Guang Ai."

Tickets are RMB 50 after 10pm, and all proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Guang Ai School. DJs will include Blackie and Donkey Tonk from The Syndicate, Nassdak (Migas), Streetkids' new signing Yauman, Bitesize Buddha (Funk Fever, Punk) and Saul D (Punk).

DJs Blackie, Donkey Tonk, Saul D and Yauman have also put together a few mixes to mark the occasion. Enjoy below!

Finally, you can find out more about Guang Ai School from their website, but if you're interested in volunteering and can't speak Chinese, give Street Kids an email at info@streetkidschina.com and they'll help get you involved.
