Something Fishy This Way Comes: Geba Geba Opens Third Location

Geba Geba has opened a third location just off of Jian Guo Lu, at the west end of the Dazhong Electronics building. Wipe your hands with a hot towel, take a sip of green tea, and open your palate with an amuse bouche. Arriving compliments of the chef in a ceramic teacup, the lightly marinated carrots, seaweed, and konjac are as refreshing as air-conditioning on a summer day.

Like most upscale Japanese restaurants, there is an open sushi bar, which allows you to see your meal take form. Order the seafood bowl (RMB 68) and watch the chef slice generous hunks of salmon, tuna, mackerel, and albacore. The fish is served over rice and garnished with a hard-boiled egg, dried seaweed, sesame seeds, scallions, and roe. The raw fish is fresh and the texture is smooth. And the roe adds delightfully salty bursts, which mixes well with the buttery quality of the egg. One of the cheaper options on the menu, the seafood bowl allows you to try a small variety of fish for a reasonable price.

Thinking outside the box, the restaurant pairs salmon and ham in its salmon roll (RMB 45) and pork and onion for its pork curry cheese roll (RMB 43). A bit more traditional, the soft-shell crab roll (RMB 48) comes out sliced into four. But don’t think this number stingy, as the roll, which is wrapped in a thin coat of cucumber, is impossible to eat in one bite. However, the largeness of the roll is due in part to it being disproportionately packed full of rice. Though the fish-to-rice ratio is disappointing, the soft-shell crab itself is crisp and meaty and the sauce has the creamy tanginess reminiscent of high-end Thousand Island dressing.

Finish the meal off with a complimentary dessert. The fruit gelatin satisfies no matter how full your belly may be. A light, cool treat that has chunks of orange, grapes, and pear, the jelly is a sweet send-off. Though on the pricier side, Geba Geba offers up palate-pleasing dishes with eye-catching presentation. Dinner and a show.
