Going Underground: Tuanjiehu, Line 10
“Going Underground” is a regular magazine column in which we explore the neighborhoods surrounding subway stations.
SELLING POINT
Tuanjiehu may be your gateway to The Village and Bar Street and Sanlitun South and Gongti, but there’s much more to this neighborhood than expat excess.
EAT
Tuanjiehu’s northeastern reaches offer sustenance for hunters and foragers alike. In the red corner is Chaoshan Beef Ball Hot Pot, where diners congregate over steaming cauldrons in a massive hall that may or may not have been converted from a swimming pool. And in the green corner, Pure Lotus – Beijing’s finest purveyors of veg parading as meat.
PLAY
Chaoyang Kosaido Golf Club is ideal for a quick round – go midweek to avoid paying big money to shoot the nine holes. The alternative for those with shallower pockets or less patience is to enjoy the driving range. It's cheaper and there's no waiting around for your turn.
SHOP
The Olympics are here, and naturally, you want to (literally) wrap yourself in your nation’s flag. But where to procure your patriotic pennant? Stroll due south of Tuanjiehu station to SLS Flags. They will help you raise your standards.
RELAX
Tuanjiehu Park can be all things to all men. In the mornings, seniors bellow “red songs” at the top of their lungs, kids swarm Beijing’s best beach during the day, and as dusk falls, the entire neighborhood turns out at the east gate to watch the niuyangge dancers with their brisk steps and jaunty fans.
