Art Attack: Unhappily Ever After

Don't be shocked if you hear screams of "Nooooooooooo!" coming from The Bookworm tonight. A discussion on endings is taking place. Will it all be happily ever after? Or can we expect sobbing farewells and the art of falling on one's sword? With the "end of the world" approaching, a night of tragic endings does seem fitting. But is everyone really down about the end of all existence? On the contrary, the hype has been unreal. Even NASA had to burst our bubble and explain why it is not coming.

Jamie Kennedy will be making history this weekend. He'll be the first American comedian to appear on a popular Chinese television program. Which show he'll be on has been kept a secret. With all the historical dramas riding the Sino airwaves these days, we can only guess that the chances of him playing a foreign invader are a good 8 in 10. In this case, the most tragic of endings would be a Chinese sing-song performance with Dashan (see video below for reference). God forbid he gets a cameo in a sequel to Laowai Style.

If state-owned media ain't your thing, then check out these brilliant art events coming your way this week.

On Saturday, UCCA continues celebrating their five-year anniversary with a film screening of "Yayoi Kusama: I Love Me," a vivid portrayal of the award-winning Japanese artist. Or if you've hopped on the hard-to-stomach-finale bandwagon, head to BC MOMA to see the Formula One documentary, Senna. We guarantee the ending will leave your heart lodged in your throat.

On Sunday, Modernista continues with the Christmas films with a screening of Monty Python's The Life of Brian. And for those of us with warmer hearts, don't miss the children of Bethel China in their Christmas performance. The kids will be celebrating the holidays with songs, plays, games and more.

During the week, head to Beijing Huiling's fifth exhibition at the Italian Embassy where we learn about the creative visions of the mentally disadvantaged. Meanwhile, the photography exhibition "I am a Beijinger" is on display at 4corners. Try to make it there on a Tuesday, when they serve half-price pho.

And now, unhappily ever after, here is a shocking video of Dashan performing on a Chinese variety show.
