Will the Smog Kill Us? Comparing the Beijing and London Smogs

You can’t get away from the smog. Literally. It’s endemic – even when I’m indoors, I can feel it in my nose, as though I’d just smoked a cigar up both nostrils, and of course news and reaction regarding it is on top of everyone’s mind. But just how harmful is this smog? Is it in any way comparable to the famous London smog of 1952? That is now believed to have caused the deaths of 12,000 people. Is what’s outside similar? Is this going to be the Beijing Smog Disaster of 2013? (Damn, I hope not).
