Beautiful Boys: Cross-Dressing in Nova Heart's New Video
Nova Heart’s latest music video just finished shooting in Beijing. It's for the track Beautiful Boys - a name inspired by a group of transvestite prostitutes the band's frontwoman, Helen Feng, encountered in Italy. The video draws from the same story, showing a cross-dresser in compromising situations at different locations around Beijing. We got a hold of some photos from the set. It seems the band, film crew and a cross-dresser, by the name of Le Le (who also does a regular drag show in Chengde), ran amok in massage parlors, KTV joints and Caochangdi night markets.
Nova Heart’s music is described by their label Fake Music Media as:
"A sinister disco beat buried under haunting soundscapes evoke images of naked ghosts dancing under a slightly run down mirrorball in an old, soon to be demolished Beijing hutong."
Replace ghosts with transvestites and this is pretty much what we’re expecting from the video – nudity plus grimy Beijing. As for the dancing part ... well that's director Jonathon Lim's choice, but hopefully it won't be those dudes in the booth above. The video will be released online in around three weeks. Enjoy the track and a live performance below.
Nova Heart's album Beautiful Boys is available on Bandcamp.
