Talking Tunes: Mayday, Mayday, Dynazty to Return
Sweaty live houses and poorly-ventilated music bars might not be your first idea of fun in the foul heat that has enveloped our nights this week, but it's well more fun than spending your weekend sitting at home watching season two of The Wire (which was rubbish).
If you've sat anywhere in traffic during the last week or so, you'll have noticed the ramped up promotion of Mayday's date at the Bird's Nest on Aug 17. Yes, that's right, the Bird's Nest – a fair indication of the high regard in which the middle-of-the-road alt rockers are held in this part of the world. They've shifted over a million units and are four times winners of the Golden Melody Award for Best Band. So they must be good, right? Tickets are selling better than hot moon cakes, but more tickets should be released soon.
And they're not the only Taiwanese export headed our way; mandopop darlings S.H.E will perform at the Capital Gymnasium on Sep 13. Tickets are still on sale.
Big-haired Swedish rockers Dynazty are set to return to Beijing Sep 15 after a successful China tour last year. They're releasing a new album shortly and will be firing off a raft of new material at their MAO Livehouse show. They gave a rip-roaring show last time they were in town, and should be a "Don't Miss" for any metal heads.
To a couple of the coming highlights:
- Paddy's Irish Bar (aka Sanlitun Paddy's) hosts Bye, Bye, Kitty who'll tear it up with a selection of '90s rock on Friday night (Aug 9)
- White+, Chui Wan and Skip Skip Ben Ben are part of a blizzard of noise rock set to touch down at XP on Saturday night (Aug 10)
Today also marks the birthday of David Howell Evans (aka The Edge), so it's only fitting that he should sing (speak) us out with his pop at vocal duties, U2's "Numb."
Don't forget, there are more music events in our events listings.
