Here's What You'll Miss If You're Not Partying With the Beijinger Tonight
The Beijinger turns 12 tonight at Spark, and you're going to want to be there. It's in the stars.
Twelve issues per year, 12 years, how best to celebrate? With the 12 Western zodiac signs, naturally. No matter what your sign, give it all up and party like a Leo with pumping beats, entertainment, free flow beer and vodka cocktails (while they last), all for just RMB 200, starting at 9pm. That's a small price to pay for 12 years' worth of fun.
In the name of this party, I couldn't resist researching my horoscope for today on the most reliable of all sites, horoscope.com (what were you expecting?). While doing so, I discovered (disturbing) statistics about astrological investment in the US. Americans are said to spend millions of dollars on astrology-related endeavors each year, and a 2005 Gallup Poll suggested that around 25 percent of Americans actually believe that astrology has an effect on the workings of the world (just check this NY Daily News article about the astrological signs of the past five US presidents to see what I mean).
This Business Insider article from last year, pretentiously titled, "Horoscopes Are Surprisingly Popular With Educated People," has some nice charts and infographics that illustrate what portion of the population actually reads these things. And gbtimes suggested in March of this year that Western astrology was gaining popularity in China because it offered more complex content with a welcomed focus on personality development. That's still not stopping some Chinese parents from pre-planning their dragon babies, though.
Regardless as to whether you're a fan of the zodiac, in seriousness or in jest, we just ask that you join us for a good time ... and maybe meet someone with your star sign while you're at it. Who doesn't love an open mind?
