Beijing: More Billionaires Than Los Angeles
That Lamborghini driving in front of you down Chang'an Jie shouldn't look out of place. According to "The Ultra Wealth Report" by research firm Wealth-X and investment bank UBS, Beijing is now home to more billionaires than Los Angeles.
As of July 2013, Beijing had 26 residents whose net wealth was at least USD 1 billion, while Los Angeles had only 22.
However, don't take those numbers out of context. First, Beijing trails Hong Kong for the number of billionaires, and trails it big time. The Fragrant Harbor has almost three times as many billionaires as Beijing (75 to 26). And New York makes both those cities look relatively poor, with 96 people whose bank accounts contain nine digits. That's a lot.
Globally, 2,170 can call themselves billionaires, with a total wealth of USD 6.5 trillion, according to Wealth-X. That's trillion with a T.
