Kipp's Picks: Paul Oakenfold, Azimuth, Frankie Knuckles Tribute, Fatman Scoop, and Henry Wu
Things are really picking up as the lovely weather continues to illuminate our Beijing daze. We can’t count how many times we’ve been told in the past week just how amazing Beijing is when the weather is like it is now. Well, this weekend we have three days to play and the perfect chance take full advantage of this meteorological shift. Make sure to celebrate by checking out these massive parties over the extended weekend, before or after you pay your respects to your ancestors, that is.
Apr 1: Frankie Knuckles Tribute
Known as the godfather of house music, this legend left this physical plane two years ago. To celebrate his life and musical legacy, Migas is throwing a special night of both music and decor dedicated to Francis Nicholls. Celebrate a life well lived while getting down to some of the groundbreaking records Frankie Knuckles was involved in bringing to life. RMB 30 (free before 11). 10pm. The Bar at Migas
Apr 1: Wooozy Offline Presents Henry Wu
The Wooozy clan are kicking off this year’s monkey business with a spring stew of soul, jazz, breakbeat, and silky melodic house from the mind of rising South London star Henry Wu. Expect head-nodding, soul-drenched, blissed-out grooves stacked together with artful basslines and graceful house rhythms. Woozy is known for bringing some pretty far out talents from the UK and beyond, so music connoisseurs be advised, this should be worth checking out. RMB 60. 10pm. Dada
Apr 1: Paul Oakenfold
Probably the most famous DJs on planet earth, Paul Oakenfold is taking a break from foam parties in Ibiza and returning to Beijing on April 1. Along with being honored by the Queen of England for his contributions to dance music throughout the past two decades, Paul has collaborated with just about every big name in the business. Check him out live at the insanity that is Sir Teen this Friday, and it is apparently free before midnight! 10pm. Sir Teen Club
Apr 1: Fatman Scoop
“Scoop that ice-cream fat man,” screamed Lauren Hill. We couldn't think of a better way to get your stage name. Isaac Freeman III, better known by his stage name Fatman Scoop is an American hype man, hip-hop promoter and radio personality famed for his on-stage rough, raw, loud voice. He'll be using that voice to up the ante at Vics this weekend. RMB 100. 10pm. Vics
Apr 3: Beehive presents Azimuth
Azimuth is a new musical project combining the energies of rising techno and house creator Cesare Marchese and veteran Philippe Quenum. Since the beginning of their collaboration, this duo has attracted the attention of major players on the electronic music scene, kicking off with releases on Crosstown Rebels, Bedrock, Rebellion, and forthcoming material on Derrick May's Transmat imprint, and Serialism.
