You Had Me At Toasted Almond Croissant: Promising Bakery Dotcom Opens on Xiaoyun Lu

One problem with being a food writer is that whenever somewhere new opens, a friend will ask you whether you've been there yet. If you haven’t, they win, as you can see by the victorious grin on their face. Annoying, sure, but sometimes they put you onto a good thing, so everyone's a winner. Prime example: Dotcom Bakery.

Located at the back of Xiaoyun Lu, next to Yun Brew and Burger Break, Dotcom Bakery with its open al fresco dining area makes a great addition to Beijing’s food scene. The freshly baked breads from the kitchen in the back are displayed on the counter, including classics such as baguettes, rye bread, and wholewheat bread, as well as two varieties of croissants, several puff pastries, and a handful of cakes. Compelled by the bready aroma in the air, we tried their sesame bread with sweet potato, which includes large chunks of sweet potato and sweet cheese as a filling.

Our favorite was the almond croissant (RMB 20). We normally choose the original croissant as our guilty pleasure, but this variation was too appealing to pass up – golden-brown exterior, topped with almond syrup, toasted almond slices, and a generous sprinkle of powdered sugar. It was flaky, buttery, and nutty, with a certain amount of sugar, but not overly sweet. It was still warm when we bought it, so instead of saving it for breakfast, we ended up wolfing it down immediately.

The staff are helpful and friendly, letting you try samples of the bread. The only downside is that they don’t open until 11am, so if you work nearby, it’s not possible to grab a croissant with coffee on the way to work.
