5 Things to Taste, Smell, Touch, Hear, and See, Oct 19-21

Beijing can be overstimulating place to live, to say the least. Let’s be real: sometimes even our sixth sense (the one that tells you when that stick of chuan'r will make you sick for the next two days) gets a decent workout. With such a wide variety of events, restaurants, and gigs to attend, we suggest bathing each of your five senses in one, if not all, of the nourishing goings-on below.

Taste

Oct 19: Zarah Autumn Drinks Launch Party

The cooling weather certainly does not mean that we are going to put down our glasses of boozy treats and lock the wine cellars for winter. It simply means we might want to replace a frosty glass of beer with something slightly more soothing to our scratchy autumn throats. Gulou Cafe Zarah is launching their cold season drinks this Friday. They will be serving both boozy and sober brews, such as well-familiar Pumpkin Spiced Latte or a Chai Tea with Spiced Rum. Not only will there be drinks, there will also be music keeping you up until late (if the happy hour on all the autumn drinks won't be enough). Zarah. Oct 19 7pm.

Smell

Daily: Tasty Autumn Street Eats

If Beijing had a sacred text of its own, it would surely say: "only when thy nose smells the aroma of the roasted chestnuts and thy mouth feels the texture and taste of a warm sweet potato, only then, hath autumn truly settled in the city". OK so perhaps writing holy writs aren't in our skill set, but we never shy away from the smooth and dense treats of roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes. What can be a better prophet of the changing seasons than the warm smell of roasted goods? Follow your nose, and if in doubt, look for the signs 栗子 or 红薯 or paste the same characters into the delivery app of your choice.

Touch

Oct 20 -21: Photography Workshop with Francois Nadeau

When we say hands on, we mean hands on. Beijing is a charming tableau just begging to be put in front of the camera lens, yet taking pictures isn't easy, and often what we plan to shoot and what shows up on our screen are two completely unrelated images. The Hutong is organizing an intense two-day workshop with a professional photographer from Montreal to help you switch that around. While DSLR cameras are preferred, but all of them are welcome. Around Beijing (meeting place confirmed after booking). Sat and Sun 10-5pm. RMB1800 (RMB1600 for the members of The Hutong).

Hear

Oct 20: DJ Kampire at Dada

The sun is set to shine again this Saturday at Dada, as Ugandan star DJ Kampire brings a colorful and bass-heavy set to Beijing's night. These are the types of beats that don't care how tired you are, what a long week it's been or whether you had to walk to Dada all the way from Chaoyang Park. DJ Kampire is not only a DJ but also a writer, and artist, taking a deep interest in feminism and gender relations. Her sets weave in Congolese rumba which reflects her interest in the traditional African music colliding with the contemporary electronic sound. Dada. 10pm- till late. RMB60.
