Five to Try on Boxing Cat’s Wholesome New Brunch Menu
Shanghai-hailing gastropub Boxing Cat may be best known for their beer, but their grub is every bit as satisfying as their suds. The quality of the food, from the brick oven, baked flatbreads and bbq chicken to wholesome homestyle brunch dishes were all apparent when we were recently invited to try a few of their new menu highlights. Here are our top five favorites:
Smokehouse Benedict, RMB 88
The eggs were visibly wiggly when this plate was set upon the table, instantly kickstarting our salivary glands. Sliver-thin house-smoked pastrami makes for a heartier alternative to more standard salmon, and balances well with the eggs and rich hollandaise sauce. The side of bread, meanwhile, was firm enough and sopp up all the saucy, runny goodness.
Fancy Pants Burger, RMB 88
This burger gives your senses a workout right off the bat, the aroma immediately taking hold, stem a combination of house ground beef, and fetching fontina cheese. Bacon, caramelized onion, and arugula made for contrasting flavors, while the crisp shredded hickory sprinkled beef patty strikes the right balance between firmness and tender juiciness.
Avocado “Toast”, RMB 68
The unfussy, get-the-job-done bread contrasts well with the fresh avocado, roasted tomatoes, caramelized onions, feta cheese and fragrant arugula in the gastropub's take on the classic Avocado "Toast". What really puts it over the top, however, is the gooey sous vide egg up top.
Crispy Ringside Red Chicken, RMB 58
Think regular old fried chicken is nothing to get excited about? This beer marinated twist on the classic will change your mind. Boxing Cat uses their popular and award-winning Ringside Red Ale as a marinate, along with a side of sweet and hot honey Sichuan mayonnaise. Above all, you’ll love the juiciness of this poultry, as well as its light breading and surprisingly spicy aftertaste.
French Toast Casserole, RMB 48
This wholesome dessert isn’t overly sweet, but instead makes use of a rich dripping of maple and a heaping of fresh fruit, which giving a nice tart contrast. The toast is baked in a cast iron pan, giving it a rustic quality that makes it all the more charming.
