5 Things to Taste, Smell, Touch, Hear, and See, Jan 11-13

Beijing can be an overstimulating place to live, to say the least. Let’s be real: sometimes even our sixth sense (the one that tells you when that stick of chuan'r will make you sick for the next two days) gets a decent workout. With such a wide variety of events, restaurants, and gigs to attend, we suggest bathing each of your five senses in one, if not all, of the nourishing goings-on below.

Taste

Jan 12: Berber New Year Feast: Yennayer 2969
While most of us are living in 2019, these Berber folk (pictured above) are way off to 2969 already.   Caravan is jumping in on the action, marking the New Year as the Berbers traditionally do in North Africa. The people usher in the first day of year, Yennayer, with a feast to end all feasts, which is where Caravan comes in. For the occasion, the kitchen has prepared a special menu of baghrir pancakes, rfissa stewed chicken with fenugreek seeds and sliced flatbread, and other exotic delicacies. The turntables, meanwhile, will be tended to by the owner himself, DJ Gulu Bazz. 6.30pm onwards. Free. Caravan

Smell

Jan 13: Start the New Year Right with Veganuary
If you're looking for a New Year's resolution that's actually enjoyable and beneficial, then giving up meat for Veganuary might be your best bet. Head on over to Sunburst Chef MM's Table Restaurant this Sunday for talks, discussions, and guides from nutritionists and personal trainers as to how to ease into a meat-free month. 3-6.30pm. RMB 60. Sunburst Chef MM's Table Restaurant

Touch

Jan 13: Improv Workshop with Beijing Broads
Female improv group Beijing Broads has been eliciting laughs from audiences for a couple of years now. Besides donating all the funds from ticket sales to charity, these funny lasses also host free workshops for those interested in showing off their skills and charm on stage. Sorry boys, only girls allowed! 7.30pm. Free. The Great Outdoors

Hear

Jan 11: Fumiya Tanaka at Zhao Dai
The pioneer of popular Japanese techno label Torema Records, Fumiya Tanaka arrives in Beijing for a late Friday night set at Zhao Dai. Having over 20 years of experience in the music industry, Tanaka has often been dubbed the one the most talented and knowledgable DJs to come out of the Land of the Rising Sun. Expect minimal techno rhythms to abound. 10pm doors. TBA. Zhao Dai

See

Until Jan 20: Exhibition: Urban Glitch
Camera Stylo may not be the first venue to spring to your mind when you think of art exhibitions. However, the cozy movie screening spot is currently home to a photography exhibition Urban Glitch by artist Chen Yu. Chen uses digital collages and photography to present bright-colored glimpses into daily life, which are later manipulated to present a distorted and unfamiliar reality. Free. Camera Stylo
