Whether it’s Israeli combat system Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or slow and fluid Tai Chi, there are plenty of ways for you to explore your interest in wushu – martial arts – in Beijing, all with the added bonus of helping you to get in shape and releasing any pent-up aggression at the same time.

Here are some of the best options in the city, most of which provide at least one trial class for newcomers.

Aikido Shinryukan

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial arts studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs. Often translated as “the way of harmonious spirit”, Aikido is considered to be one of the least aggressive martial arts, whereby practitioners defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury. The art places an emphasis on integrating the mind, body, and spirit.

Instructor Stefan Sklenka has practiced Aikido since 1996 and has been teaching at both Haidian and Dengshikou hutong dojos since 2013 (read our previous interview with him here). Newcomers are welcome to attend and participate in three free trial classes. Please make sure to arrive 20 minutes in advance to each class, and wear comfortable clothing. Contact 136 8151 1334 or bjshinryukan@sina.com or WeChat (ID:StefanSklenka) for more information.

Krav Maga

Krav Maga is the official hand-to-hand combat system of the Israeli Defense Forces. Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, it is designed to teach real-life self-defense techniques in the shortest possible time. Learn to defend yourself against common chokes, grabs, and bearhugs, and learn how to use common weapons such as guns, knives, and sticks. Krav Maga also teaches practitioners valuable techniques on how to function during the stress of a sudden, violent encounter.

Tested on the battlefield and in the streets, the Krav Maga practical approach to self-defense will make you safer and fitter. Visit Krav Maga China’s website or contact info@kmgchina.cn/ 150 1051 4712/186 1053 4434 for more information.

Jiu-Jitsu

Evolved in parallel to Japanese jiu-jitsu,Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu involves fighting in close quarters and is all about defeating an armed and armored opponent using either minimal or no weaponry, while also manipulating the opponent’s force against themselves rather than meeting it with one’s own force.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu China provides a mixed level class led by expert coach Steve which is appropriate for all adults, beginners, and advanced students. Visit their website for more information, and contact 136 5100 8501 or WeChat (ID as the same number) to arrange your class schedule.

Chinese Kungfu

If you're more interested in exploring the world of traditional Chinese martial arts, then kungfu might be just the thing for you. Every Saturday and Sunday you can attend classes in a courtyard hidden in Dengcao hutong near Dongsi. The classes are run by two Chinese veteran kungfu practicers and are aimed at promoting traditional Chinese Kungfu and a healthy lifestyle.

The organizers require that attendees sign up for a minimum of two months so as to ensure class stability and that attendees of every skill level are guaranteed a suitable partner. Contact 6559 7966 or fbkbeijing@gmail.com for more information.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a Chinese traditional exercise that uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind. It is believed to have many mental and physical health benefits and can improve postures, balance, flexibility, and strength.

San Feng Tai Chi Club was founded in 2006 and offers professional classes catering for mixed age groups and levels. They are offering three major forms: 9 Steps Yang Style Tai Chi; 24 Steps Simplified Tai Chi; and 88 Steps Traditional Internal Style Tai Chi.
