Michelin Releases Updated 2020 Beijing Guide, 30 Restaurants Awarded Stars

The second-ever edition of the Beijing Michelin Guide, the 2021 edition, was released this morning, with a total of 30 Beijing restaurants awarded stars, up by seven from last year. Here is the full list of starred restaurants, with new additions in bold:

This year's awardees are largely the same as the 2019 results, with a few additions: seven new one-star restaurants, one new two-star restaurants, and one new three-star restaurant. Notable new one-star additions include Jing at Peninsula Beijing, whose chef Julien Cadiou also won the 2021 Michelin Young Chef Award, as well as Vege Wonder, a vegetarian fine dining restaurant in Wangfujing that we visited last year and very much enjoyed. Imperial Beijing-style restaurant Jingji, a sub-brand of Xinrongji, was a new addition to the two-star listings, while King's Joy moved up from two stars to three stars.

A further 51 restaurants got a nod with the Michelin Plate award, which recognizes quality restaurants that caught the attention of inspectors and is thought to represent restaurants that could be on the brink of getting a star in the next edition. As with last year, Western restaurants are better represented on the Michelin Plate list than among the stars (although perhaps that's as it should be in a city with so much outstanding regional Chinese cuisine).

This year's Michelin Plate restaurants include Ling Long, Rive Gauche, Blossom Vegetarian in Dongzhimen, the Qianmen branch of Quanjude, and Wolfgang's Steakhouse. Once again, TRB Hutong failed to get a star but did make it onto the Michelin Plate list.

During the press conference, Michelin also unveiled the Green Star, a new category for this year, aimed at "role model establishments" that are at the “forefront with their sustainable practices.” Beijing is the first Chinese destination to include this distinction in the city's guide. Vegetarian restaurant King's Joy near the Lama Temple was awarded the Green Star this year.
