Beijing United Foundation for China’s Health
Description: UFCH has been piloting a program for rapid, large scale screening and immediate treatment for women, especially in remote areas that lack easy access to healthcare. The program utilizes a faster screening process for HPV that allows women to self-sample, and those who test positive for the HPV virus in our on-site mobile lab, to be evaluated and treated for precancerous changes before the virus develops into cancer. Population Served: UFCH is dedicated to providing or facilitating access to critical medical care for China's most disadvantaged groups, including orphans, impoverished families, homeless persons, abused women, migrants and other groups in need of care. Needs Addressed: Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer among women worldwide with more than 600,000 cases globally in 2020. In China, it is the second leading cancer among women under 45 with over 100,000 new cases per year. It is the cause of death for over 30,000 women per year due to late diagnosis or inadequate treatment. Cervical cancer rates are especially high in China due to the lack of widespread screening and convenient treatment. HPV virus is the precursor to cervical cancer. Although HPV vaccines are available, they are expensive and have limited distribution. As such, HPV and cervical cancer will continue to impact millions of women for the foreseeable future.
Love & Hope Center in Beijing
Description: Love&Hope center is a non-profit organization providing vocational training for underprivileged children to broaden their opportunities for future work. Urban centers attract hundreds of thousands of families from rural China, yet the children of these families are often unable to receive basic education. Many of them become involved in criminal activities, or become depressed, which often leads to suicide. Love&Hope's purpose is to provide educational and social values for these migrant children, left-behind children and the children in special need. Population Served: Underprivileged children from rural area. Needs Addressed: Due to the country's hukou (household registration) system, children in rural regions cannot attend public schools in urban areas, resulting in such tragic separation. Unfortunately, there are 60 million left-behind children all over China. Most of them can only see their parents once a year for 15 days during Chinese New Year holiday. Situations of the left-behind children that we mainly focus on: Education and Safety.
