Shake Up Weekend Brunch With These Shakshuka Skillets

Besides a classic English breakfast, shakshuka has to be my all-time favorite brunch pick. For those thinking “sha... what now?”, shakshuka is a North African and Middle Eastern dish that consists of eggs poached in a mixture of chopped tomatoes, peppers, and onions spiced with chilies and cumin. It’s traditionally served up in the iron skillet it’s cooked in and is a great sharing dish, though no judgement if you want to keep this delicious dish all to yourself!

There are a number of spots in Beijing serving up a whole range of shakshuka variations from the traditional to the avant-garde. Here are our top picks.

Toast at the Orchid

As an East-Mediterranean restaurant, it should come as no surprise that Toast at the Orchid serves up a banging Shakshuka (RMB 78). Toast keeps things super traditional with poached eggs cooked, in their own words, "moderately over seasoned tomatoes". It comes served with Orchid’s homemade pitta bread, which is perfect for dipping, and if you want to add a little something extra their house-made merguez sausage can be added for RMB 15.

Jing-A CBD

Jing-A doesn't pull any punches with their take on shakshuka, offering a Green Shakshuka (RMB 90) which sees tomatoes switched out for spiced spinach mixed with fresh herbs, cashews and of course two eggs served up with Jing-A’s black sesame sourdough and lemon.

The Rug

This all day brunch spot with multiple locations ups the game with their Special Veggie Shakshuka (RMB 108). Here, two eggs are poached in a tomato sauce with eggplant, zucchini, squash, and other fresh veggies added to make a dish that is hearty, healthy, and will definitely leave you feeling satisfied.

Side Street (Dongcheng Branch)

Suppose you are one of those rare specimens capable of avoiding the temptation of Side Street’s fantastic burger selection. In that case, you should definitely try their take on the classic shakshuka, which takes the form of an Indian shakshuka. The Sunny in the Middle (RMB 58) consists of spiced tomato curry with a runny egg in the middle served with rice. You’ll find it in the Curry Bowls section of their menu, and it makes for a perfect brunch or lunch dish.

La Medina

Using slices of green pepper to create two egg “flowers”, La Medina’s shakshuka is without a doubt the prettiest looking on the list. Their Shakshuka Eggs (RMB 48) comes with green peppers, onion, fresh tomatoes, and tomato sauce. For meat eaters, they also do a Shakshuka Merguez (RMB 58), which has the addition of merguez sausage.
