Rains Today, Tomorrow to Drop Temperatures Entering Sanfu

Going outside this morning, the cooler air from the rain last night offered a nice respite from the 40 C temperatures the capital has been going through as of late. The good news is the rain is expected for at least another day, according to Beijing Evening News.

An alert for rainstorms and strong winds was announced by the Central Meteorological Observatory on the evening of Jul 11, with the observatory adding that Beijing is expected to have more precipitation going into Thursday.

The rains have brought a welcome temperature drop, with highs today ranging at around 27 C with lows of 23 C, temps are expected to rise to 30 C tomorrow and then hover around 34-35 C for the rest of the week.

This brief pause in high temperatures is a welcome one, but it’s the eye of the storm as it were as China heads into 三伏 Sanfu, aka “the dog days of summer”. It’s during this 40 day period when summer temperatures are hottest in China. That being said, though, for the next 30 days things don’t look all that bad.

Looking ahead at weather forecasts for the next 30 days, temperatures are only expected to be in the 35-38 C range for a few days this month. Of course, forecasts can always change, so we’ll have to wait and see whether or not this heat wave is truly behind us.

Whatever may come, this bit of rain and overcast is a welcome change, especially considering last week was the hottest week for the entire world on record, per findings released by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Jul 10.
