Welcome Spring at the Three Shadows Sakura Photo Fair
It’s that time of year again! The weather is warming, and the springtime beauty of Beijing has already begun to reveal itself. Of course, it’s cherry blossoms we’re all going gaga over, and while there are a number of places around the city where you can capture those precious cherry blossom snaps, one location in particular promises a rather unique photography experience.
On Apr 4, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre will be hosting its third spring photography fair, inviting you to come take some time to relax and enjoy the beauty of spring. The event consists of three main elements:
Spring Photography
Two beautiful cherry blossom trees – affectionately named "Somei-Yoshino" and "Yae Sakura" – will be in bloom in the courtyard, making the perfect subjects and presenting a beautiful atmosphere for some enchanting springtime photography.
Outdoor Photography Bazaar
What fair would be complete without wonderful crafty creations for sale? You won’t want to miss this photography market that brings together artists, curators, experts and scholars as well as photography lovers from all walks of life. There will be a range of items exhibited, services offered, or things available for sale at the market, including photography-related products (e.g. photography accessories, formal photography publications and art, photography accessories), photography technique showcases and services (e.g. framing, Polaroid photography, wet film photography experiences, camera maintenance, training, post-processing services, etc.), featured organizations, groups and individuals, light snacks and beverages, and more.
Three Photography Exhibitions
As an additional treat, the event will mark the opening of these thought-provoking exhibitions:
- “Metal Odyssey” – Featuring work from Jess Ching-wa Lau and Chia-Shin Yang and using metal as a symbol of patients and medical devices, the 2024 Jimei-Arles Image Curator Award-winning exhibition “Metal Odyssey” explores trauma and memory in life. The exhibition presents interactions between the artists and their families through medical records, images of luggage and travel, and via life experiences as patients. Reflecting on the patient's healing journey, presented in the form of documents and symbolizing a difficult and courageous odyssey, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the deep intertwining of metal and art.
- “Glinting Light: An Exploration of Luo Bonian's Photography” – This exhibition focuses on Luo Bonian's photography and exploration as a "self-taught" banker. Highlighting the "golden years" of his photographic career from 1930 to 1940, the exhibition displays nearly a hundred rare original works, as well as other documents important to Luo's life and artistic practice, to create a vivid image of the artist and his kaleidoscopic artistic world.
- “Unfamiliar Edge” – Hao Xinyu's solo exhibition showcases his creative work spanning six years as a retrospective of his personal visual language and the evolution of his creative methodology. In his work, he often explores the feeling of powerlessness in scenes that are "not easily brushed by light" or that are often overlooked by others, using imagery, materials, and spatial construction to piece together and build up potential associations and reconstructions of his surroundings at a given time. Hao leaves part of the narrative expression space to the color and material itself to tell, hoping that the chaos and conflict beneath the calm and order might surprise even himself.
