Did you know that the true story of our beloved, jolly Christmas icon Santa Claus begins with Nikolaus (in German) or Saint Nicholas (in English) or Sinterklaas (in Dutch), a fourth-century Greek Christian bishop from the Mediterranean city of Myra in present-day Turkey? Surprise! Yup, he was neither from the North Pole, nor a reindeer-sled driver！

In fact, Nikolaus had inherited a huge sum of money which he gave away to the sick and those in need. He became known for his generosity and his love for children, a story that eventually evolved into an elf-loving, toy factory owner… Yes, a bit far from the truth, but we get the idea. To this day, St. Nicolas is celebrated throughout Europe, and the traditions of giving gifts, merrymaking, and hearty laughter still give us light and love!

On Sunday December 1st, Zarah is commemorating St. Nicolas’ generosity with a delicious Sunday Brunch and a fun-filled kid’s Christmas Corner organized by the theater dance company MAMONAHI!

Our Sunday Brunch will feature Christmas delights like Yorkshire pudding, Pork Neck Steak, German Lebkuchen, Christmas cookies, roasted candied almonds, Christmas Santas, along with brunch classics, including cheese and cold-cut platters, smoked salmon, freshly baked breads & croissants.

Our special Christmas Corner will have several fun Christmas activities for the little ones, like making handicrafts, playing games, and receiving Christmas socks filled with chocolate, not coal!

And if you are in the mood for extra merriness, we recommend our all-you-can-eat-and-drink option which includes free flow of beers, high quality wines, sparkling wine, Zarah’s secret-recipe cocktails as well as our famous mulled “Gluehwine” as a Christmas special.

Cheese Fondue, which was promoted as THE Swiss National Dish a century ago, simply means “dip-bits-of-food-in-a-communal-pot” similar to Chinese hotpot!

Instead of a spicy Sichuan pepper infused broth, the ceramic pot is filled with melted Swiss Gruyere & Emmentaler Cheese with a HINT of “Kirschwasser” and served with long-stemmed forks instead of chopsticks.

We will serve our Cheese Fondue with a variety of delicious dippers such as crunchy cubes of bread, a plate of vegetables, a mixed side of cornichons, pearl onions and cocktail tomatoes as well as a bowl of pineapple, which you can dip into your bubbling pot!

While temperatures in the capital keep falling and weekend plans switch from cold beers to mulled wine, Zarah is getting ready to provide the ideal offering for wintertime that is melted cheese perfection!

To kick off the cheese fondue season, Friday, November 22nd, from 7pm to late, Zarah is hosting a special “Cheese Fondue Craze” event - a three-hour all-you-can-eat buffet session full of cheesy goodness.

From 7pm – 10pm Zarah’s famous Cheese Fondue will be available which will be paired with a selection of free-flow appetizers such as bruschetta, salads and more, with all the fundamental fondue dippers. Cornichons, mini pearl onions, baby potatoes are just a few of the offerings that will be available in the “Cheese Fondue Craze” buffet. But why not giving some local variations a try? Have you ever considered pairing cheese with sweet and purple potatoes and lotus root? Since you live in Beijing and not on the Swiss Alps, this might be the right occasion to give this gooey delicacy a Chinese-style twist.
