Beijing Hotspots Closed for This Month, Traffic Resticted in Central City

It's summertime in Beijing! But this summer may be a bit different than usual, at least for the next month or so, as national celebrations will mean that certain major landmarks will be closed to the public for a bit. So, if you are someone who likes to hit every nook and cranny of the Beijing streets, it is vital that you stay updated on the latest restrictions on travel and transportation happening in the city.

Tiananmen Square closed through June, nearby traffic restricted this weekend

For Beijingers living in Dongcheng district, be careful not to step foot in Tiananmen square and its surrounding areas as it is already closed as construction commences for the celebration infrastructure. The closure will go through Jul 1.

During construction, parts of surrounding areas will be enclosed with fences to avoid visitors from interrupting with construction workers.

The area will be reopened on the afternoon of Jul 2, but the specific reopening time is subject to change.

Meanwhile, several major roads surrounding the Tiananmen area will be closed at various intervals for the weekend of Jun 12-13 for a military drill. If you take public transit through that area, buses will be provided with detours.

The central area of Beijing Olympic Park is temporarily closed

The Beijing Olympic Park Management Committee is closing the central area of the park effective from 00:00, Sunday, June 6th to 00:00, Thursday, Jul 1.

The closure covers a wide range of areas, extending from Beichen East Road in the east to Aoyuan No.3 Security Checkpoint in the south, from Beichen West Road in the west to National Stadium in the north.

On another note, restrictions will be eased for personnel who hold activity-related identifications. The ban is only imposed on the central area of the park, and the rest of the area will remain open to the public.

The National Swimming Center is temporarily closed

Following the closure of the Beijing Olympic Park, the National Swimming Center, also known as the Water Cube, is closed starting from Jun 7.

Water sports lovers who enjoy a taste of summer splash will be sad to find that the center has put a temporary stop to activities such as swimming, rafting, and water slides.

It is still not clear when the place will be reopened and we can only hope it won’t be too long for us to jump back in the pool again!

Jishuitan Station  will return on June 18th

Though it's not related to this summer's celebrations, it's worth pointing out that the reopening of Jishuitan Station has been delayed. Due to construction needs, the closure of Jishuitan Station on Line 2 was extended from Jun 6 to June 17, and the station is expected to reopen Jun 18.

The time of the closure of Mudanyuan station remains unchanged, starting from Apr 10 to Jun 17. The station is scheduled to resume operation on Jun 18.
