Pebbles Courtyard Brings Mexican Tamales to the Capital with Tamale Thursdays
Mexican restaurant Pebbles Courtyard are bringing tamales to Beijing in what appears to be a first for the capital (please do let us know in the comments if any other restaurants also offer them, though). Starting Sep 1, every Thursday freshly made tamales will be available for all to enjoy.
But, first things first, if you’re like me and have never had tamales before (being from a small city in the UK, access to Mexican food was pretty limited) you may be wondering just what they are. Tamales are made of masa (corn dough), with added fillings all steamed together in a corn husk, though some areas also use plantain or banana leaves, which is usually filled with a sweet or savory filling and steamed until firm. In Mexico they are a traditional comfort food and can be eaten as both breakfast and dinner.
Now, the tamales that Pebbles are offering actually have a slight twist, because you can’t fit a lot of filling inside a tamale they will be serving them topped instead. Their base tamals consist of masa mixed with salsa roja and lard, filled with chillies and onion rajas (grilled strips) and will be freshly steamed every Thursday afternoon.
You can then choose from three different toppings to finish off your tamale: Flank Steak (RMB 108), which is flank steak, grilled onion and nopales with a creamy sweet potato/carrot and chipotle puree all finished off with chile de arbol salsa and sour cream. If pork is more your thing they have Cochinita Pibil (RMB 88) which combines slow brased pork pibil, frijoles (refried beans), habanero salsa, diced plantain, queso fresco and pickled red onion. The final option is Pollo (RMB 78) which sees shredded chicken combined with salsa verde, sour cream, sautéed onions and queso fresco.
Pebbles will only be offering tamales on Thursdays from 5-10pm and there will be a limited number, so once they’re gone they’re gone! So be sure to get there early to secure yourself one of these delicious Mexican treats. Along with the tamales Pebbles will also have their usual daily deal of buy one get one free on a random agave spirit cocktail.
Well, what are you waiting for? Get down to Pebbles tomorrow (Sep 1) to grab this new special deal.
