Beijing News You Might Have Missed This Week, Nov 4

Beijing is a happening city! Don't miss a thing with our weekend roundup of the latest news.

Beijing's Winter Arrival Delayed by One Week: In an unexpected twist of weather patterns, Beijing is set to experience a late and abrupt arrival of winter this year, reports Beijing Daily. The capital has been basking in warm temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius, shrouding the city in a warm haze, while other regions in China are enjoying record-breaking temperatures above 30 degrees. Winter's official onset in the capital is anticipated on Nov 6. This onset is nearly a week later than in previous seasons, with average temperatures predicted to plummet over 10 degrees.

Beijing also recorded its second warmest October in over six decades this year. The city witnessed temperatures averaging 3.4 degrees above normal in the final ten days of October, setting a new record for this period since 1961.

Beijing Subway Weighs Standardization of Line Names: As Beijing's subway system continues to expand, the transit system is mulling over plans to better standardize subway line names, according to Beijing Daily. Despite substantial enhancements to the city's subway network, including the successful implementation of continuous and cross-line operations, a cohesive naming system for interconnected lines remains absent. This issue is evident in the naming of Line 1 and Batong Line, which despite being interconnected for the past two years, maintain their separate identities, leading to commuter confusion. In 2021, the Beijing Metro System initiated a social media campaign to propose new names following the cross-line operation of Metro Line 1 and Batong Line. However, this effort did not result in any renaming. Operationally, the company continues to refer to this interconnected line as the "Line 1 Batong Line."

Beijing Revolutionizes Rail Infrastructure with a Colossal Tunnel Boring Machine: Beijing has unveiled a colossal tunnel boring machine, set to revolutionize the Beijing-Tianjin high-speed rail line, reports CGTN. Named the Beijing-Tianjin Synergy, this colossal machine measures a staggering 123 meters and showcases an excavation diameter of 13.8 meters, weighing in at an incredible 2,900 tons. The creation of this machine underlines Beijing's dedication to advancing the frontiers of infrastructural development.
