City Driving: Ford Bringing Redesigned Mustang to China

The redesigned Ford Mustang will look so cool when it cuts you off on your electric scooter.

There may be a new addition to Beijing streets coming soon, alongside the Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Maseratis that we now see so commonly: the 2015 Ford Mustang.

Ford Motor Co. has been relatively tight-lipped about newly redesigned version of this classic model, but China fits prominently in the planned rollout. The car maker is targeting affluent young buyers for a car that will cost over USD 80,000 to buy locally. The move in part seeks to match General Motors' sales of their own classic, the Camaro (cue Whitesnake video), which retails for about RMB 450,000.

Just over a year ago, Ford was pilloried by Mustang fans for not selling the car in China. However, the car sold fewer than 100,000 units in the U.S. last year, according to The Wall Street Journal, hence the redesign and repositioning for foreign markets.

Ford seems to be counting on existing enthusiasts as its potential customer base for the high-maintenance Mustang, which would be available in the second half of 2014. "[Wei Mingyao], part of an 82-member Mustang fan club in China, has been an enthusiast for a decade, and finally bought a special import last year for $82,000. 'The car looks muscular,' he said. 'Whenever I drive the Mustang, I can easily catch second glances.'"

We'd certainly give it a second look.
