After some initial struggle to find this place in the deserted labyrinth that is Sanlitun Nan we were welcomed into Homeplate by a friendly fuwuyuan who took us to our table.
The decoration was nicely done, there was a shabby chic vibe going on without being too kitsch; rough, wooden floorboards and solid looking tables and chairs. The big old American flag painted on the corrugated iron sheet covering one of the walls sounds like it might be too much, but it kind of worked. Despite being utterly superflous, the chopped fire logs stacked up throughout the place add a nice, rustic feel.
Now, onto the food: having been to the Sanyuanqiao branch of the Homeplate restaurant I knew what to expect; great food at great prices. This was absolutely the case; the pulled pork sandwiches were stuffed with smokey, tender meat, the crispy batter complimented the sharp taste of the fried pickles, the ridiculously large selection of BBQ sauces could cater to even the nitpickiest of BBQ sauce gourmands. However, and it pains me to say this, the Caesar salad we ordered was the worst salad I've ever seen in a restaurant. Now, I'm not sure if the staff had never seen a Caesar salad before, or if they were just too downright lazy to do the salad properly. Whatever the case, the apparition that made it's way to our table was basically a lettuce that had been cut in half and dumped on a plate, accompanied by a boiled egg cut in two halfs and a cherry tomato. On top of the half lettuce was what I think was supposed to be Caesar dressing - it was really just mayonnaise with vinegar in it. On the top of the "dressing" were two slices of bacon. No Parmesan, no croutons. It was hard to eat to be frank - especially the mayonnaise vinegar.
In summary: everything was fantastic aside from the salad, so if you go to Homeplate just stick to the meat and the deep fried things; it's not as if you go to Texas BBQ to get slim anyway!
