A Tiny, Welcome Dose of Diversity: The House Opens at Gongti
Run by the same people as Mix, this three-story club consciously attempts to fuse the trademarks of Gongti nightlife (bottle service, table charges and spotless design) with the less commercial playlists of clubs like Lantern.
So it was that I found myself listening to The House’s DJs spinning driving, funky techno on the second floor while I sipped a highly drinkable “Berrytini” (RMB 55) – one of a selection of Grey Goose-sponsored vodka cocktails. Well, I wasn’t going to pay RMB 30 for a Tsingtao or a Carlsberg, and I certainly didn’t need a bottle of Johnnie Walker (RMB 690).
It’s good to see house and techno getting additional (much-needed) breathing space in Beijing, with The House’s events so far featuring scene veterans like Weng Weng behind the decks. The dance floors are on the small side, though – you’re more likely to want to hang out on the well-designed roof terrace and enjoy the surprisingly impressive Workers’ Stadium view.
The House won’t revolutionize Beijing’s electronic scene, but it does add a tiny, welcome dose of diversity to Gongti’s nightlife.
Good for: House and techno fans, bored Gongti clubbers
Also try: Lantern, School
