I've been going to Tim's for a few years and always valued it as a good establishment with an owner that cares... until tonight that is!
Went there with 3 friends for dinner and conversation as it was close enough to our meeting point and been going there for years... we had the beef ribs and beef brisket (important for the rest of the review). Service was the same as usual with no complaints as drinks came out in a timely fashion and the staff was smiling. We had the vegetarian dip which was slightly worse than usual but nevertheless acceptable.
The ribs came out I gotta say that mine were as good as usual, so were those of the second person. our 3rd companion on the other hand inherited a travesty of a dish with completely burned meat that tasted like gasoline. Not wanting to make a scene or spoil the evening, he set it aside and we kept chatting.... I spotted Tim, who I'd known for a while, said hello and proceeded to ask about the ribs and explain that my friend's dish was nowhere near the quality whereas ours were great. Tim proceeded to blame the quality control, the different sizes of cuts, the cooks and stopped short of blaming the weather. He then asked if he could get us a drink and walk away!!!!
the kicker is that when the waiter came in much later to clear the table, he inquired about the almost-untouched ribs and profusely apologized offering to bring a replacement... something the owner didn't ever bother doing.. by then, we didn't care!
To say that I was disappointed is an understatement. I expect such nonchalant behavior from Chinese staff but not a western owner, and especially not one that has been around for as long as Tim has been in town.
Generally, if i don't care about an establishment, I won't care about seeking out the owner to complain or even write about it.... in this case, I do care and I did expect a lot better response to a complaint about an obviously faulty offering from the owner of the joint.
The rest of the meal was ok, if not pleasurable, but I won't be patronizing the establishment again.... not with the multitude of choices in Beijing.
