Went to Saffron with three friends last night. The location is beautiful. The building itself is covered in ivy, and the inside decor is charming and rustic.
Once we got our table we ordered the bread basket. The bread in it was nice, especially the Ciabatta, but for 68 yuan 5 pieces of bread with a meager portion of Hummus, Pesto and Tapenade doesn't really cut the mustard.
For main I ordered the steak. The taste wasn't bad at all, but the presentation was awful. When I order a steak I like a nice thick cut of meat. If you have to pre-slice it, then at least arrange it nicely. What I got was a pile of meat that looked like it had been slopped out of a tin on top of some mashed potato. Not really what you expect at 170 yuan.
My friend ordered the aubergine salad. She said it was nice to start with, but couldn't finish it because the saltiness of the anchovies became too overpowering.
The other two got Seabass (the only dish that was presented nicely), which was very good, and a Vegetable Lasagna. The Lasagna was also nice. However, presentation was the let down again - A big ol' lump of it in the middle of the plate, without so much as a sprig of Parsley for garnish.
Can't fault the service - attentive without loitering, no mess ups or wrong orders, and not one single utterance of the dreaded "ma shang".
So, all in all:
Service: 4
Decor: 5
Food: 3
Value: 2
Will I go back? Maybe, but I won't be getting the steak.
