New Openings: Madam Zhu’s Kitchen
Rarely does a new restaurant have the polish of Madam Zhu’s Kitchen.
The decor? Thoughtful and stylish, with a series of amusing portraits showing the proprietor and her friends playing with their favorite ingredients.
The food? Delicious and memorable.
Madam Zhu – founder of popular Sichuan chain Yuxiang Renjia – has branched out with this venture, staffing her kitchen with chefs from Sichuan, Shanghai, Guangdong, Zhejiang and beyond.
The result: confident updates of classic regional Chinese, like luscious black pepper tenderloin (黑椒牛柳粒, RMB 88), delicate “lion’s head” meatballs with crab roe and freshwater bass (蟹粉鲈鱼狮子头, RMB 38) and a lazi ji (RMB 38) that expertly balances the complementary flavors of spicy chillies and numbing peppercorn.
