Classical Rather than Innovative: Kura Kura Opens in Sanlitun
Fans of Ichikura should take a moment’s pause before visiting this tiny new bar from the same stable. Ask yourself what you like about the original.
If it’s Ichikura’s stately decor and hushed ambiance, Kura Kura’s funky red-and-white color scheme may be a little too “modern” for you. Is it the reliably high standard of the cocktails? Kura Kura should satisfy, though you might want to allow time for the new bar to get fully up to speed.
The current cocktail list (average drink RMB 50-60) is classical rather than innovative – the Moscow Mule, made with ginger-infused vodka, is a winner. If you drink whiskey and know what you like, the generous pours are worth the average RMB 80 investment.
Ichikura haters (you philistines) may even enjoy Kura Kura simply for its central location, friendly crowd and more relaxed feel. If you want Ichikura, go there. If you’re ready for something different, Kura Kura deserves a look.
Good for: A quiet cocktail, whiskey
Also try: Ichikura, Twilight
