Weekend Live Music Roundup: Queen of XXXXing Everything, Part of The Best China Band & Final RandomK(e) Gig

The temperature may be dropping into the below zero range, but some of Beijing's best acts are just coming back to the city, while others are moving to even colder climes. Our "queen of XXXXing everything" and her band Subs take over Yugong Yishan tonight. MAO Livehouse is going to be packed with skater punk boys and young girls on Saturday because their favorite pop punk band Reflector has finally finished their national tour. They'll be having a final celebration of their "new album" with their hommies, although the album is not so new anymore, since it has been out there for more than six months. Meanwhile Lure, another local pop punk band formed in the '90, just finished their new one, and will celebrate in the same venue on Sunday.

There are more local acts this weekend, but let's talk about laowais.

Beijing's favorite French musician Zhang Si'an told the Beijinger that he hoped his band The Amazing Insurance Salesmen could win the China battle of the Global Battle of the Bands during our interview after they won the Beijing round. Last weekend, his wish has come true in Hong Kong – the band with one Frenchie, one Dutchman and one Chinese guy will represent China at the final battle of the competition in Kuala Lumpur in February. The Frenchman will show you how Chinese he is tonight at Jiangjinjiu Bar by playing very Chinese folky tunes using very Chinese words that he wrote.

Too bad that good news always comes with bad news. Long time Beijing music promoter Jon Campbell of YGTwo productions (and a former Nightlife/Music Editor for tbj) is leaving Beijing to move back to his hometown of Toronto with his wife. In his ten years in Beijing, Jon has been instrumental in developing the local music scene, and was the main driver behind bringing acts like Abigail Washburn to town, as well as acting as the tour manager for Subs on two European tours. He is also the drummer for local blues band Black Cat Bone and the founder and drummer for RandomK(e) (which also features our former Insider's Guide editor Adam Pillsbury on bass).
So, cherish your last chance to see RandomK(e) at 2 Kolegas on Sunday. We wish Jon all the best back in his hometown.
