Clubhouse: Josh Wink To Play INTRO 2011
UPDATE: In a change to the original plan, organizers Acupuncture Records have announced that May 21-22's INTRO 2011 electronic music festival has been moved to 751 D-Park in 798 Art District - the event will not take place at Tongzhou Canal Park as previously advertised.
Philadelphia’s Josh Wink was at the forefront of the early ’90s rave scene in the US, melting dance floors and scoring hits with tracks like “Higher State of Consciousness.” Two decades on, Wink brings his record bag for a headline set at the biggest weekend on Beijing’s electronic music calendar, INTRO 2011, which takes place May 21-22 at 751 D-Park in 798 Art District (moved from originally planned Tongzhou Canal Park). We warmed Wink up for Beijing by asking him about Star Wars, Radiohead and his shifting perception of the humble banana.
Some people think DJing doesn't require any skill. What would you say to those people?
Everybody is different.
What song would you choose to kill a party?
I don’t want to kill a party – do you mean this is in a good or bad way? As an entertainer, I want to perform to the best of my abilities. By using my knowledge of music and production and my history of being involved in electronic music since the 1980s, I strive to rock a party!
What's the oddest kind of dancing you've ever seen while you've been DJing?
People express themselves in different ways. I'm not one to judge someone’s expression through dance!
Which Star Wars character would most likely dance to your music?
Chief Chirpa. He knows all the moves!
Radiohead’s new album. Discuss.
It’s a good one. Still, a bit too short for me – I want more!
You’re a vegan. When was the last time you had meat?
Actually, I’m not vegan any more. I eat fish. Deep sea, wild-caught fish is my favorite. I still don’t eat eggs or dairy, though. Last time I had chicken was in 1990, and last time I had red meat was in 1983.
When was a banana not just a banana?
After I turned 14, bananas had all-new meanings!
What do you want to do but haven’t tried yet?
Skydiving. Still have to do it! Also ice scuba diving.
What fact scares you the most?
If you urinate when swimming in a South American river, you may encounter the candiru. Drawn to warmth, this tiny fish is known to follow a stream of urine to its source, swim inside the body, and flare its barbed fins. It will remain firmly embedded in the flesh until surgically removed.
Tell us a secret about yourself.
I love foot massages.
Give us a scoop about another celebrity.
Lang Lang was my old neighbor in Philadelphia, before I moved last year. He lived across from my house.
Which Chinese celebrity do you most want to see at INTRO?
Just an enthusiastic crowd that wants to be educated with electronic music – they are my true celebrities.
What should girls wear for your set?
Something they feel comfortable in, as they'll need to move around and sweat!

751 D-Park was the venue for previous INTRO festivals in 2009 and 2010. No other changes have been announced - dates, lineup, ticket prices and other details remain unchanged.
The change seems to have been forced by police concerns arising from problems with ticketing and alcohol sales at last week's Strawberry festival, which also took place at Tongzhou Canal Park. the Beijinger will have more on this over the next few days.
