Atelier: Manchit Au
Ricostru is continually touted as one of China’s most promising emerging brands. Headed by local designer Manchit Au, the one-year-old label earns credit for its unwaveringly sleek, pared-down clothing and accessories – a refreshing departure from most of the overly embellished items seen around town. We asked Au about the privilege (and accompanying pressures) of representing China’s new era of talent.
Very few Chinese designers have gained international recognition. What image do you try to present to the rest of the world?
Our team is super young, and so we’re adept at gauging what China’s new generation of stylish, free-thinking youth want. With everything we design, we try to inject a bit of attitude. I think our passion and commitment to authenticity make a world of difference.
What is the concept behind the Ricostru aesthetic?
Ricostru brings the emphasis back to craft and design. The visual concept is clean and comfortable – a reflection of my current mindset and living conditions.
What appeal does it hold for the local market?
I am almost certain that the minimalism will eventually work to our advantage – people are beginning to recognize the need for classic styles and textures that are easy to mix.
What’s the first thing you ever sewed?
Before I ever studied design, I tried to make myself my own vest.
Are there any textiles you try to avoid?
Any fabric that has been chemically altered.
Which celebrity can you see wearing your designs, and why?
Faye Wong. The simplicity of my designs matches her subtle taste.
Name five things you only recently learned to love.
- Red wine
- Photography
- Reading maps
- Modern dance
