Dress Up Your Tresses at Catherine de France
For those who find getting their haircut to be a stressful situation, the antidote to your troubles can be found in Catherine de France Hair and Beauty Salon (CDF). Open since July 7 in Sanlitun's East Avenue Building complex, the original space was termed “really ugly” by the eponymous owner. However, after French architect Nicolas Guarnotta redesigned the salon, the finished product is as glossy and stylish as the hair on their clients’ heads. The high ceilings, mirrored columns, and glass entrance wall create a bright and airy space, which is a departure from the cluttered, fluorescently lit salons you often find in Beijing.
Having just closed her Riviera salon, Catherine remarks that the new shop is much more internationally minded. Trendy European music can be heard over the whirring of blowdryers and decorating the walls are selected paintings from the Image Gallery, up for sale for interested customers. The hairdressing team speaks Chinese, French, English, Russian and German, so you can get your hair cut without fearing that your instructions will be lost in translation. And if you’ve ever had your hair butchered by an inexperienced hairdresser, rest easy in knowing that all of CDF’s stylists have at least 15 years of experience. Catherine herself has been working with hair for 20 years, training in Paris and managing salons in Moscow, Budapest and, of course, Beijing.
There is a quiet glamor to the salon that translates not only to your haircut, but also to your overall experience. The washing station is a separate room that is outfitted with dim lights and an ambient noise soundtrack. A scalp and head massage comes with the shampoo and conditioning. And before the haircut begins, you are outfitted in a fresh, white robe.
Examining my hair, Catherine correctly diagnoses that it has been a while since my last haircut. Subscribing to her edict of “enhancing beauty as naturally as possible,” Catherine suggests subtle highlights to even out the coloring. She also decides it would be best to chop off the damaged inches of hair below my shoulders, the casualty of a months-old perm. Throughout my haircut, the other stylists occasionally came over to comment. At CDF, they stress that it's not one client working with one hairdresser, but one client working with the entire salon. The salon serves men, women and children, with haircut prices starting at RMB 100 for men and RMB 180 for women. A cut from the creative director, however, will cost men RMB 600 and women RMB 1,200. The salon also offers Brazilian blowouts, starting at RMB 2,000, and henna rinses at RMB 600. And every month, there are a new set of promotions and sales.
And the cherry on top of an already excellent experience? As she is blowdrying my hair, Catherine gestures towards the makeup artist who comes over with her kit. “We like to have our clients leave looking as beautiful as possible,” she says with a smile. And though I was looking in the mirror for the entire process, I am still pleasantly surprised by the end result. My hair, which usually hangs in straggly curls, is suddenly bouncy and soft and the highlights bring out the strands' natural sheen. The bags under my eyes are gone. I even look like I’ve lost some weight. And indeed, as promised, I leave looking like a better, brighter version of my former self.

Catherine De France provides an impeccable service coupled with great hair stylists. It was the only good stylists I came across in my time in Beijing who were willing to do beard trims. The stylist himself was very cooperative and spoke great english, he cut my hair and beard exactly as I wanted it. The service along with the staff were very friendly and inclusive. All in all, I would highly recommend this salon to everyone and people of all ages!

Re: Dress Up Your Tresses at Catherine de France
I discovered Catherine de France 2 years ago in Sanlitun and I must say I have always been pleased with the service. It had been difficult for me to find a hairdresser here in Beijing that can properly treat my Wester style hair and offer me a decent haircut. I have found the perfect place. I particularly wish to recommend my hairstylist Aurelien for his professional skills and always good advice. Come and try out Catherine de France, you won't be disappointed.

Re: Dress Up Your Tresses at Catherine de France
The place was recommended to me by a friend last year and since then it has become my Beijing hairsalon.
It is refreshing to finally find a place in Beijing where people know what they are doing, and especially have advices to give you (instead of asking if they should cut "here? how long here?"). The staff speaks english, which makes a great difference, and the prices are really good too (you can choose the different experience of the various stylists). I also asked advice on a digital perm and was told with my kind of hair it was better to not do it, because it would have not worked: I really appreciated the honesty, since it's something very expensive.
Have recommended it to many friends and would again.

Re: Dress Up Your Tresses at Catherine de France
I've been living in Beijing for 5 years and have struggled finding a good spot for haircuts. Every spot I've tried has given me a very similar cut. I heard about CDF through a few coworkers and finally made the trip across town to try it. The first time I went, the stylist was not available due to a hairstyling competition so I went for the Junior Stylist who is very skilled. I did not bring in a picture the first time and simply told me to do whatever he wants. He was shocked by how much freedom I gave him, but in return, he gave me a great short cut that I loved! It is rare to walk out of a hair salon in Beijing and actually love that cut you received. Ever since, I have been returning to CDF. I am looking forward to trying different stylists to see what each can do with his/her creativity and skills. The professionalism and the stylists' skills are worth the time and the money.

Recommendation Catherine de France
I got a hair cut at CDF a few weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. I get up in the morning and don't really have to do much because the hair just falls well automatically which saves me a lot of time. Many thanks to the by a Junior Stylist. Aside from that, first time you go, you get a 20% discount!!

Re: Dress Up Your Tresses at Catherine de France
I strongly recommend CDF to people with all hair types and colors! My experience was very positive and I found all of the staff incredibly professional and thorough with every service they provide.
I am an Aussie who finds it extremely difficult to find a decent hairdresser when traveling anywhere in the world as my hair is very long, incredibly thick, curly and blonde!! Not only did CDF blend my color beautifully, the cut is literally the nicest I have had since I can remember. I can't remember the last time I had so many comments about my hair :).
I also had beauty services and the beautician was fantastic.
Thank you Catherine and the team at CDF! I now do not have to be worried about my hair in Beijing!

Re: Dress Up Your Tresses at Catherine de France
I got my hair cut at CDF by a Junior Stylist a week ago and I'm very pleased with the results! First off, you get a 20% discount for your first haircut, which put it just under the 100 rmb mark, AND its a decent haircut!
I was a little nervous because the Stylist (one level above Junior-- always go for second cheapest) wasn't available, and the next level up wasn't in my budget. Then the receptionist goes, are you sure? Which, really isn't reassuring.
I booked an appointment anyway, though had to wait about a half hour for him to finish another person's hair. Not so bad, given they have a stack of English, French and even German (?) magazines for patrons to browse through. Also, their orange juice was great.
So, I def will be coming back, and booking the same Junior Stylist without worrying about my hair being butchered.
Thanks, CDF!
