Talking Tunes: Dance Punk with LCD, A Cello Metal Apocaplypse or Wholesome Pop Rock
Brace yourselves, the end is nigh. Well, it might be. Ever wondered what happens at the end of the apocalypse? You could have a chance to find out on Saturday when Finnish cello metal heads Apocalyptica play what may (or may not) be their final show together. We'll have a gig review as well as some exclusive snaps for you on Monday.
In other big news this weekend, James Murphy, formerly of the much-missed LCD Soundsystem, is sure to blaze some of the New York dance punk troupe's classics as he takes to the decks at the UCCA's annual Creator's Project bash on Saturday night. Tickets have been limited for this one. Congratulations if you've managed to get your hands on one, it's sure to be a helluva night. They'll also be screening the feature length documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits, which chronicled the band's last ever live performance in Madison Square Garden last year.
If cello metal or dance punk aren't your thing, the seemingly universally-liked Beijing Beatles will be performing at V.A Bar on Saturday night. A Hard Day's Night will consist of a run through The Beatles back-catalogue, following a dinner at The Veggie Table, and a showing of the classic rock comedy of the same name featuring the Fab Four themselves.
Split Works have announced Terror Danjah, considered to be one of the godfathers of grime, will be in town for a show at Dada on October 2. The producer has worked with some of the biggest names in grime and has been credited with giving the world grime's more soulful cousin, rhythm 'n' grime.
In other news, Dutch rockers The Black Atlantic are set to appear at Yugong Yishan on October 17 supported by Swedish singer-songwriter Halo of Pendor. While Painkiller magazine have announced two shows to celebrate their 12th anniversary. Painkiller Fest 2012 will feature metal legends Cannibal Corpse and Stockholm satanists Dark Funeral. The Cannibal Corpse show will be on October 20, while the Dark Funeral gig takes place on November 11. More details as we get them.
Finally, Yugong Yishan have begun to announce the line up for their Jz Festival in October. A sampling of jazz royalty has already saved the date with two-time Grammy winners Yellowjackets inked, as well as traditional Cuban band Ochún and Grammy Award winner Terri Lyne Carrington. It could all descend into a Grammy off.
Here's Apocalyptica with Not Strong Enough from their new album 7th Symphony to get you in the mood for their (maybe) farewell show on Saturday. See you in the mosh pit. I'll have my double bass with me.
Have a great weekend.
