News You Might Have Missed: Stabbings, Hit and Run and Marriage Ads

Travel in Beijing may be annoying, but this week it resulted in a number of fatalities. On the lighter side of the news, there are bumbling criminals, billboards for marriage, swarms of frogs and a Traffic Security Check Exhibition.

A stabbing occurred last Friday at the Beijing Railway station when a man attacked a young couple who were waiting in line at the ticket counter. No details on the attacker or victims has been released but this will probably set off another debate on mental health care in China. Police plan to increase security at the railway stations during the upcoming National Day holiday.

Another fatal accident occurred last Tuesday night when a female was found on Chaoyang Beilu with a crushed skull. Her bicycle was found nearby and she’s presumed to be the victim of a hit and run.

Police recently caught a team of burglars who have been charged with committing more than 60 thefts in Beijing. The thieves purchased over 40 tools and watched online videos on how to pick locks. Apparently, they forgot to watch the videos on how to avoid getting caught.

Need a wife? Just buy a billboard. Three guys in their late twenties to early thirties pooled their resources to purchase space on a billboard in Zhongguancun. The ad pictures the three men, looking quite dapper, along with their names and stats, as well as a huge slogan that reads: "No joke – we're looking for wives!"

Hundreds of frogs tried to cross a road in Changping over the weekend but were squashed by oncoming cars. One of our Shuangjing-based colleagues reported a similar outbreak in his neighborhood. At least it wasn't raining frogs. Now we're just waiting to see what plague hits the city next.

The 3rd Traffic Security Check Exhibition will be held in multiple subway stations displaying actual items that have been seized by subway security. The items include model guns, knives, firecrackers, explosives and mortar bombs.
