Talking Pints: Mexican Independence, Greek Wine and Kentuckian Beer

Amid all the recent talk of closures it's nice to note that an old favourite has reopened its doors after undergoing an extensive facelift. It's been a couple of months, but Cheese and Wine has opened again on Chaoyang Park West Gate.

Word got to us recently about this year's Carrefour Autumn Wine Fair. The annual event, on the rooftop of the Shuangjing Carrefour, takes place over three days and offers folks the chance to sample its full range of imported wines. The opening ceremony for this year's edition takes place on Friday October 12 at 6pm and will include "food tastings, lucky draw and live music". And of course, lashings and lashings of free wine. Ahem, I mean the chance to sample various wines sensibly through their tastings.

Ladies' choice, XIU, has introduced an "Industry Night" on Mondays. If you work in the hospitality or airline industries, then you can go in for Absolute Vodka at RMB 300 per bottle and selected bottled beers at RMB 150 for six all night long. Just the type of promotion airline pilots, silver service waiters and their customers have been waiting for.

Head along to The Drive Thru tonight for a tasting of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale (or KBBA). Aged in bourbon barrels and clocking in at a whopping 8% ABV, the tasty brew is one for the cicerone. RMB 100 gets you in for the sampling and buys you a pint of the grog after a guest talk from a genuine Kentuckian. But unless that there Kentuckian turns out to be Jonny Depp or Catherine McCord, I'm guessing most of the gathering would be happy to skip straight to the beer.

Bar Veloce is hosting a "Wines of Greece" tasting event tonight with the opportunity to sample three exotic drops unique to the Hellenic Republic. Elsewhere, it's the gaffer's birthday at Beer Mania so, naturally, they're having a crazy hats party. Grab yours and head along; "Thierry will be offering a free Keg of Beer to all the guests wearing crazy hats." Could be an expensive night for those guys.

Mesh has introduced a new cocktail menu over at The Opposite House. Some of the highlights include the Angry Bull (Belvedere vodka, fresh ginger & mint leaf, Red Bull, fresh lemon juice and house champagne) and the Bourbon Beer (bourbon whiskey, elderflower cordial, fresh lemon juice and beer).

Great Leap Brewing will be celebrating its 2nd anniversary next month and is planning a birthday barbecue. Still with Beijing breweries, the Slow Boat Team previewed their newest drops at Brussels last night. The Flying Whale IPA and the latest version of their Captain’s Pale Ale should be making an appearance in stocking tap houses shortly.

Finally, Q Mex will be celebrating Mexican Independence Day with a party on Saturday night. Get along for Mexican fingerfoods, pitchers of margarita, cold beers and Mexican tunes till the break of dawn.

Wherever you get to, have a great weekend.
