Top Teen Reads: BLF's Ambelin Kwaymullina

The 2013 Bookworm Literary Festival will feature several writers, illustrators, and scholars from the world of children's and young adult literature. We're all adults here but let's face it, who can say no to big letters and bright colors and pictures? To entertain our infantile taste in literature, our friends at The Bookworm asked their experts for some top picks.

Ambelin Kwaymullina hails from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. She's been the recipient of many awards and her works include Crow and the Waterhole, Caterpillar and Butterfly, and How Frogmouth Found Her Home. She will be at BLF 2013 to discuss her first book, The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf, on Wednesday, March 20, 10am.

For teen readers:

Tjarany Roughtail by Gracie Greene and Joe Tramacchi
"Every time I look at this book, I discover something new. It tells of the culture and history of the Kukatja people of the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is at once a picture book, a language book, an art book, and a wonderful journey into an ancient, living culture."

The Obernewtyn series by Isobelle Carmody
"A fantastic series of young adult post-apocalyptic fantasy novels by a terrific Australian writer. These books have got it all – action, adventure, romance, and gripping plots that ask bigger questions about discrimination, tolerance, the rights of animals and the place of human beings in the world. I have all the books in this series lined up on my shelf, waiting to read them through again from the beginning when the final book is released in 2013."

The Arrival by Shaun Tan
"A story told without words. It’s brilliant."

Tickets to Ambelin's BLF discussion are currently on sale at the Bookworm
