Carry More Cash: Taxi Fare Increases Tomorrow

Don't forget to carry a little extra yuan in your pocket when you're out and about this holiday because taxi fares will rise from RMB 10 to RMB 13 for the first three kilometers starting tomorrow, June 10.

With this increase in price, the fuel surcharge is going to go down to RMB 1, so just like in Shanghai, expect to pay at least RMB 14 for your cab ride. The distance charge will go up from RMB 2 to RMB 2.3 per kilometer, according to a Thursday announcement.

We asked you last month how you felt about the taxi reforms hitting Beijing, which included a "unified taxi-booking program" and lowering the fee drivers pay to their taxi companies, but it remains to be seen how commuters and drivers will feel in the coming weeks after the price hike. Well... Since I gave up on the taxi scene two years ago, the fare increase means little to me. Though I do hope it will make taxi drivers less grumpy. Would be nice not to be constantly cut off by taxi drivers with a massive chip on the shoulder when scootering around the city.
