Capital Bites: Currywurst, Laowai Dumplings, and Win Pizza
In sausage news, of which it seems there's always some these days, currywurst is coming soon to the Beijing streets. You'll be able to find it on Jianchang Hutong near Andingmen over at Stuff'd. For those of you unfamilar with the Germanic tradition of currywurst, it's a 20th-century invention (attributed to a Berliner) of steamed and then fried wurst (pork sausage) doused in curried ketchup.
Sanlitun sausage lovers, listen up: Andy's Craft Sausges and Tavalin Bagels have hosted a few weekend grill sessions with much success. Starting next weekend (September 14), they will be having regular BBQs. You'll also be able to find the handcrafted sausages outside of Paddy O'Shea's on Wednesdays during their weekly quiz. After Karl Long's departure from our fair city, a new quiz master has taken over and Andy's Craft Sausages will be providing a round of prizes fresh off the grill. If your trivia skills don't quite make the cut, fork over a bit of cash for a snack.
Japanese Bakery Gang Gang, which has long supplied Pekotan, has dorayaki-style mooncakes available for the month of September. A box of eight pieces is available for RMB 120 and they are accepting orders over the counter in-store or via email.
Max Levy's gourmet goods, marketed under the name Okra Works and Traitor Zhou's, are now newly available at Deli de Luxe near Chaoyang Park, in addition to Modo Urban Deli, Cafe Ricci and a handful of other locations.
Gung Ho! Pizza's Wangjing location at Kirin Place just north of Wangjing Soho will open next Tuesday September 10. They'll be running a buy-one, get-one-free deal on pizzas for the first two weeks (unti September 24). Order online or call 5738 9040.
The free goods keep flowing with Gung Ho!'s Weibo promotion – drop them a line on Weibo (@gunghopizza or hashtagged #greenhopizza#) before the end of the month with a note on how you'll add a bit of green, sustainability into your life. Three people will win pre-paid VIP vouchers for RMB 1,000.
In true 3sums-style, RMB 100 will snag you unlimited food and drink on Saturday from noon-10pm. They've partnered with the boys over at 京A and extended the free-flow to include craft beer.
A group called Laowai Baozi are hosting a pop-up restaurant at Zap in Sanlitun this Saturday, September 7 (7pm-midnight). They'll be serving "traditional Chinese baozi stuffed with properly untraditional stuffings." Fillings will include philly cheesesteak, Thai chili chicken, a Mediterranean vegetable combination and an apple crumble. It's probably something many of us have imagined before (in fact, I was just talking about it with a friend the other day, so the timing seems fortuitous), but how will this actually manifest itself in real life? I'm definitely curious to check it out.
