Randy Barracuda Brings The Funk, Cracker Can Grunge
Skwee provocateur Randy Barracuda descends on Beijing this Saturday (June 28), bringing with him a classic assortment of prestine analog synths and drum machines to blast out the jams at Dada.
If you aren’t familiar with the Skwee genre, think of it as a combination of 80’s funk, old school hip-hop, and nerdy explorations with musical hardware akin to something like chiptune. I usually don’t care much for chiptune, but this is really something else. These tunes are sweaty, with a punk edge, and are bombastically guttural.
In support of Randy are our very own Skwee heads 87fei87, who will be laying it down thick until midnight. Not to be missed. Here are some tracks to give you a better idea of what this weirdo will sound like:
Next up on Saturday is Cracker, performing at MAO Livehouse. What can I say about Cracker? They found huge success in 1993 with their album Kerosene Hat, which included the hits Low and Euro-Trash Girl. They are a modern fusion of many genres including ye old rock 'n' roll, punk, country and psych.
Before forming Cracker, frontman David Lowery was also in the group Camper Van Beethoven, who are one of those seminal mid 80’s groups that blended post punk, folk, and country into something beloved by music nerds everywhere. So, needless to say, Cracker have been around and are involved pretty deep in America’s subculture of alternative musics. Check them out this weekend, and don’t forget your disposable camera and Mean People Suck or No Fear T-shirts, because this show will be pretty dank.
