Sino-French Film City Collaboration in Zhejiang
China Daily reported that the city of Cannes is about to join forces with the China Film Exchanges and Cooperation Association, the Asia Pacific Exchange (CFECA) and Cooperation Foundation (APECF) to develop a USD 1 billion French-influenced film and culture center in Anji County, in the eastern province of Zhejiang.
This will also be the home for a new film festival similar to that of Cannes and as well as marking the beginning of regular Sino-French film exchanges. The festival is expected to maintain strong Chinese features (whatever that means).
This move is one of many made to push the Chinese film industry to a higher level and draw in a wider international audience and appreciation. With mainland productions having better year-by-year results on the international circuit, there is need for a similar festival in Asia that will garner the same levels of hype. As always, we can expect it to be a slow and censored boat to China, especially for those more transgressive titles (with full frontal nudity).
